Penwith College Welfare and Personal Support
Student services - You’re not on your own
What is College all about?
As a student at College you have considerably more freedom than you had at school. There are no uniforms, you call the staff by their first names and you manage your own time outside your timetabled hours. It is by no means an easy ride and you are expected to be mature enough to attend class when required and on time, hand in your coursework by the given deadlines, use the library and college resources to extend your learning and give 100% commitment to your studies.
Moving on from school to college is a daunting time for many students. Not only do you come to a new building, filled with new people; you are also likely to be studying new subjects with new staff – all new experiences. With so much going on and the expectation that you are mature enough to manage your own time, there is a lot to take in. Here at Penwith College we understand all of this and that is why we have plenty of people to help and support you throughout your stay at college and beyond.
Personal Tutor
All students will have the support of a Personal Tutor. This will be a member of staff who teaches you in at least one subject, as far as it possible. It’s their job to ensure you meet your learning goals, to run your weekly tutorial session which could cover topics as diverse as exam techniques to drug awareness. They will also meet with you on a one-to-one basis to listen to any worries you may have at College or outside and let you know how you are getting on. In addition, the College offers all students access to the Guidance and Support Team who are always on hand to have a chat and answer any queries or problems that students may have.
Study Help
On arrival at College, all students have to sit an initial assessment. This exercise is designed to pick up on any issues that you might have with your studies so that we can help you to reach your full potential at College. Because we all need a little help from time to time, our specialist staff are there to support you in your studies throughout your time at College. Whether it’s advice, information or individual help with exams you need, we’re never far away. You do not have to struggle on your own. If you think you will need some extra help with your studies call Sarah Lower to make an appointment with our Learning Support Team. Tel: 01736 335118.
Careers Advice
The library has an extensive careers section, whether you are looking at furthering your education or finding a job. In addition, whatever your plans are for the future, our Guidance and Support Team can help you look at the choices available and assist you in the process. If you are thinking of going on to university we can help with your UCAS application, we will also provide references for you if you are going on to employment. We offer additional tutoring for Oxbridge applicants. Trips to UCAS fairs and various employment events assist students with making the right choice for their futures.
Counselling
If something is concerning you and you need someone to talk to in confidence, our trained counsellors are there to help. Counsellors are available on an appointment basis booked through the Student Services Team.
