This Foundation Degree intends to produce a competent sports-person, who is able to evaluate performance levels, and can plan and implement training and coaching methods that will enhance individual and/or group performance. Students will not only participate in many sports, gaining practical skills and a high level of fitness, but will also develop a thorough knowledge of the theoretical elements involved, from human anatomy, physiology and psychology, to management and finance.

This is a 2-year course in partnership with the University of Plymouth.

What will I gain?

The combination of performance analysis and sports management provides opportunities for progression on to the second year of relevant degree courses within the sports of leisure area. Alternatively, it offers many employment openings within the public or private sectors of the sports/fitness industry, for example; fitness consultancy, performance analyst, health/fitness trainer or coach, or combining any of these with a management post.

What qualifications do I need?

An interview with the Course Co-coordinator, allowing for an independent student assessment, will determine acceptance on to the course.

You will need to have achieved either 4 GCSE passes at grade A* to C including Maths and English, plus one A-level qualification, preferably P.E or Sports, a GNVQ Advanced, AVCE/BTEC National Diploma, or equivalent qualification (120 UCAS points).

You will need to be enthusiastic about sports and keen to participate in a variety of practical activities.

Mature Students
You will need an appropriate Access to Higher Education certificate or relevant skills and experience.

What is my commitment?

Each year is divided in 2 semesters. Attendance is required for approximately 3 days per week for 2 years.

Students also undertake a practical work experience placement, which includes producing a written report and counts as one module.

The course develops analytical skills to enable the student to assess, explain and develop performance using the previously mentioned elements.

Sports and business related modules are studied in both years, with assessment taking the form of written assignments and examinations. An individual study based on a chosen sport will be presented by students, after the examination of a range of team and individual sports.

Up to 3 hours a week will be spent on practical activities, providing the opportunity to link practice to theoretical concepts. You will also have the chance to visit other sporting institutions around the country.

Method of Teaching

The modules are delivered by experienced staff using a variety of teaching methods, including lecturers, discussions, fact finding and practical sessions, guest speakers, visits, videos and ICT.

Our Sporting Facilities

Our Sports Hall provides the ideal facility for physical education training whatever the weather. With 800 square metres of floor space. We also have a fitness suite (featuring cardio-vascular exercise equipment and free weights area). In addition stands the popular 8 metre climbing wall ideal for perfecting mountaineering techniques.

We have access to rugby, football, hockey and netball facilities adjacent to the College and the newly built Penzance Leisure Centre opposite.

What shall I bring with me?

A sports kit, stationery and a computer disk.

A once-only College deposit of £25 is payable by all students on enrolment. This entitles you to the use of the College library and Resources centre, course of textbooks and other college equipment. The deposit is refundable at the end of the course, provided that all college property is returned undamaged and any sums due to the College have been paid.

All students who enrol on qualification course of more than 21 guided learning hours are also required to pay a student registration fee of £10. This is non-refundable charge that covers all the qualifications within a programme of study at the College. (This means that if you are taking several qualifications, you will only pay students registrations fee once).

Note: Any course costs and associated costs (such as excursions and visits, protective clothing, etc.) can be ascertained from Admissions and the Course Co-ordinator before enrolment.
