FdSc Marine Sports Science

2 Years

Level 4

This Foundation Degree is designed for those aspiring to work in the Marine Sports and Leisure industry. The course contains strong elements of both land-based sports analysis and coaching (delivered at Penwith College) and water-based sports science (taught by our partner, Falmouth Marine School). The course offers progression to a full honours degree in Applied Marine Sports Science at the University of Plymouth and was designed with this progression in mind so as to make this progression seamless.

This programme is a full-time, two year course.

What will I gain?

Students gain a thorough knowledge of sports physiology, psychology and coaching, plus some exposure to business management allied to an in-depth analysis of marine activity provision, water-based outdoor skills, navigation and coastal zone management. This mix of knowledge and skills is ideal for a career in the Marine Sports and Leisure industries. As with all Foundation Degrees, there is a work-based learning module and, indeed, a strong vocational thrust to the whole award.

What Qualifications do I need?

Normally 4 GCSEs (including Maths and English) at grade C or above, and at least 120 UCAS tariff points gained through A or A/S levels, GNVQ Advanced, AVCE/BTEC National Diploma, NVQ level 3 - or the equivalent – in any subject area, though some study or interest in subjects related to marine sports science is especially welcomed.

Mature Students
An Access to Higher Education certificate is preferred but relevant experiential learning may be an acceptable substitute.

What is my commitment?

At Falmouth Marine School water-based activities take place on Mondays and classroom learning on 1.5 days per week at Penwith College. As with all full-time undergraduate study, there is an expectation that learning will take place in your own time and we envisage a total weekly commitment (including time at the two colleges) of about 40 hours.
