The Institute of Legal Executives is the professional body representing legal executives and trainee legal executives in England and Wales, Northern Ireland and many overseas countries. As experienced lawyers specialising in a particular area of law, legal executives have their own recognised status and role within the legal profession. ILEX Vocational opens the way to a responsible and rewarding career in law by ultimately enabling the student to become a Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives.

Course structure

14 hours per week for a full-time course (1 year). Work experience is encouraged.

4 hours per week for a part-time course (2 years).

Note: Only students with a proven academic ability and a high degree of commitment will be considered for the part-time course.

Course content
The course studies typical day-to-day legal situations met by solicitors. Legal Executives are involved in similar work although the training and qualifications are different. The course will study the following areas of law:

  • Property Transactions
  • Obligations (Contract, Consumer and Employment)
  • Family Welfare (including Wills and Succession)
  • Business Law
  • Criminal Law
  • Tort & Civil Litigation

A portfolio will also be compiled to show familiarity with the workings of the English

Legal System.

Entry requirements

Under 25
You will need to have achieved a minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade c and above in academic subjects, including English. Other qualifications may also be acceptable, for example: Access, LCCI, Advanced GNVQ or AVCE.

Over 25
Enrolment is generally considered on the basis of past experience, whether academic or in business, commercial or other areas.

Progression opportunities

Those who have the ability and dedication may continue the ILEX training route to qualify as solicitors.
