Certificate in Education

(Post-Compulsary Education & Training)

2 Years

Level 4

This programme will provide initial training of a high quality for practising tutors and trainers in post compulsory education and training. The demands of employers in the education sector are changing, this course will help you as a tutor meet such demands.

Penwith College is an approved centre to deliver this University of Greenwich

programme of study.

What will I gain?

A nationally recognised teaching qualification from the University of Greenwich. This is an award for teaching adults (i.e. 16+). You are able to graduate and receive your award at the University of Greenwich. The course qualifies you to teach students aged 16 and above, in further and higher education. It does not give qualified teacher status to teach in schools with under 16s.

What qualifications do I need?
The course is ideally suited for those with some previous teaching experience or current teaching. You will need to have 120 hours teaching in place over the 2-year period before the commencement of the course. We do our best to arrange teaching practice if required, but cannot guarantee to provide teaching practice for all students because of the potential range of subjects in FE. A minimum of 30 hours must be completed in the first year of study. You will also need to have achieved a GCSE in English and Maths (or equivalent) and qualifications relevant to your subject area or a degree.

Enrolment takes place in September of each year, although a few places are available in January.

What is my commitment?
This course is an in service part time Flexible Learning Programme.

It is a two-year course comprising of two semesters per year, September to January and January to May approximately.

The mode of study is part time flexible learning with study days built into the programme for students who wish to take part in meetings and join other students for sharing experiences of good practice and discussing assignments.

Method of teaching
A fully qualified, experienced tutor will guide you through the programme of study. The materials that accompany the course are excellent, but do require students to be organised and able to manage their own study. Contact with your tutor can be made via e-mail, telephone, fax, visits, meetings with the tutor and by letter.

Funding
DFES grants are available to students for course fees via the County Council Education Department. Course materials are not funded and cost approximately £60 a year.

Student loans are also available through the student loan company.

Note: Any costs and associated costs can be ascertained from Admissions and the Course Co-ordinator before enrolment.

If you would like to be considered for a place on the course, we will now require you to complete an application form and supporting letter setting out your reasons for wanting to do the course.

Successful applicants will be invited to interview and enrolment at the next available opportunity.
