Certificate of HE in Combined Arts

(English and History)

1 Year

Level 4

Course structure

Students wishing to combine a university level study of English and History should consider this course. The course can be taken in one full-time academic year or studied part-time over, normally, two years. The two disciplines are mixed so as to allow progression to stage 2 of English and History Major/Minor programmes at the University of Plymouth’s Faculty of Arts.

Course content
The course covers:

  • Professional Development
  • the Historian’s Toolkit
  • the Tudors and Stuarts
  • Rhetoric
  • the 20th Century Novel and Shakespeare’s Plays

The history elements enjoy a Cornish context.

Entry requirements

60-120 UCAS points from “A” Level or BTEC National Diploma, or NVQ level 3 in a relevant vocational area, or an Access to HE certificate. Professional experience will be considered for accreditation of prior learning.

Progression opportunities

Students who seek progression will be advised at the outset of their programme as to which combination of subjects and modules will yield the progression sought. Typically students will be able to progress to stage 2 study at the University of Plymouth following a Major/Minor pattern of the two disciplines. It is also possible that the University of Exeter in Cornwall and other CUC partners will entertain applicants from the course for direct entry into stage 2 of some of their honours degree programmes.
