Higher Education Certificate in Further Education Teaching (C&G 7407)
Certificate in Further Education Teaching
(City & Guilds 7407)
1 Year
Already teaching in further and/or adult education but lacking a formal qualification and the necessary skills? Are you a professional person called upon to train others as part of your job? Do you want to move into teaching adults? Then this is the course for you. The course is divided into 2 independent stages. Stage one must be completed successfully before the candidate can proceed to stage two.
What will I gain?
7407 is the major teacher-training qualification in post 16 education and training. It is also closely linked with the Certificate of Education (F.E.) for which it attracts up to
60 CATS points.
What qualifications do I need?
No formal qualifications are required, but it is expected that you are already teaching, or about to teach, in further education.
7407 Stage One
This will be available during the autumn term.
Candidates must attend College for 4 hours per week for 10 weeks and undertake 20 hours (minimum) of teaching practice.
Content
In stage one, candidates will be helped to meet their immediate needs of preparation, delivery, assessment and evaluation. Candidates are expected to produce a folder of work and to keep a personal development journal. Candidates will plan, prepare and deliver a micro-teach – this will take the form of ‘a short lesson’ to the rest of the learning group.
A College tutor will observe and assess the candidate in the work place. Teaching may be paid or voluntary.
On successful completion of stage one, candidates will receive a certificate of unit credit issued by City and Guilds and a profile issued by Penwith College.
7407 Stage Two
This will be available during the spring and summer terms.
Candidates must attend College for 4 hours per week for 24 weeks and undertake 40 hours of teaching practice (minimum).
Content
In stage two candidates will be helped to develop their teaching skills, to further understand their student’s needs, background and aspirations, to demonstrate awareness of equal opportunities and health and safety, to plan, present and evaluate, to communicate effectively, to understand the basic principles of teaching and learning in relation to their existing teaching within their receptivity to alternate ideas, to design, make and use a range of teaching and learning materials.
Candidates are expected to produce:
- A course folder
- A teaching and learning file
- A personal development journal
Assessment
A College tutor will observe and assess the candidate in the workplace for a total of 12 hours; 6 of which will be directly observed. Teaching maybe undertaken in large or small groups; instructional work, one to one coaching and supervision, distance learning, computer-assisted learning and resource-based learning. There must be some evidence of working with groups and individuals.
You may wish to study for stage one without proceeding to stage two, but you may not begin stage two unless stage one or an acceptable equivalent has been completed successfully. Your teaching must be with adults i.e. post 16’s. This qualification does not qualify you to teach in nursery, primary or secondary education.
What shall I bring with me?
A lever arch file, paper, pens and a notebook.
