Nursing is a very demanding and at the same time rewarding occupation. A nurse, now more than ever before, needs to have both a love for people and a good understanding of the theoretical and practical issues involved in this profession in order to do the job efficiently, and to cope with all the requirements that nursing in the 21st century entails. The Access course is the stepping-stone to a career that is always in demand!

What will I gain?

The Access to Nursing course is validated by OCNSWR (Open College Network South West Region). The award is made up of a minimum of 45 credits level 3 (and more can be achieved if desired) and is an entry requirement for a diploma or a degree course in nursing at almost all colleges and universities throughout the country.

What qualifications do I need?

No formal qualifications are required, but you must be 19 years or over and have a successful interview with one of the course tutors.

What is my commitment?

13 hours spread over 2 and a half days per week attendance at College for 3 terms. You will also be expected to allow for an equal amount of personal study time at home.

What does the Syllabus contain?

Content
You will study 4 main units:

  • Health and Well-being
  • Health and Disease
  • Health Psychology
  • Structures and Practices in Health and Social Care Services

These modules are designed to give you a valuable insight into health promotion, preventative measures, common diseases, behavioural patterns during illness, the role and services of the NHS and Social Services. In addition to the subject-related contents you will also study application of number, communication and IT skills with other Access students.

Assessment

During your course you compile a portfolio of your coursework.

You gain credits for each completed unit of work at competence level 2 or 3. There are opportunities to gain extra credits at level 3. A minimum of 45 level 3 credit are required for entry to Nursing. The main units will be tested in 2 exams. Coursework and exams are set and marked by your tutors. Even if you do not complete the whole course, credits will be awarded for completed stages.

Method of teaching

A variety of teaching methods are used, including lectures, seminars, group work, role play, theory and practical work, and guest lectures from outside the College.

What shall I bring with me?

A lever arch file and ten dividers for your portfolio, a small notebook to keep a diary of your learning process, a file for your notes, pens and paper, and a computer disk.

What does it cost?

Tuition fees may be waived (subject to status). All you pay is a registration fee to OCNSWR, currently in the region of £100.

A once-only College deposit of £25 is payable by all students on enrolment. This entitles you to the use of the College Library and Resources Centre, course textbooks and other College equipment. This deposit is refundable at the end of the course, provided that all College property is returned undamaged and any sums due to the College have been paid.

All students who enrol on qualification courses of more than 21 guided learning hours are also required to pay a student registration fee of £10. This is a non-refundable charge that covers all the qualifications within a programme of study at the College. (This means that if you are taking several qualifications, you only pay the student registration fee once).

Note: Any course costs and associated costs (such as excursions and visits, protective clothing, etc.) can be ascertained from Admissions and the Course Co-ordinator before enrolment.
