What is an NVQ
If you are looking for a work-based qualification, an NVQ is probably just what you’re looking for. NVQs are based upon your ability to do a particular job and do not involve formal examinations. They are based on National Occupational Standards. The successful completion of an NVQ shows that you have up-to-date skills, not only what theoretical knowledge you have, but also what you can do in practical situations.
Employers are crucial in developing the standards on which NVQs are based. This means that the qualifications are geared to meet the needs of the employer. Many employers find that the NVQs improve employee motivation and performance. They result in better staff/supervisor relations. In addition, because employees learn to understand the business better, this results in greater productivity and competitiveness.
Each NVQ is made up of a number of mandatory units – these are the units that are seen as the sector specific standards of competence, together with a number of optional units – these are the units you choose because of the work that you do.
All NVQs are competence based. This means that they are linked to the candidate’s ability to competently perform a range of tasks connected with their work. Candidates plan a programme of development and assessment (including assessor observation of the candidate in their workplace) with their assessor and compile a portfolio of evidence to prove that they are competent and knowledgeable in their work role.
There are different levels of NVQ and the level at which you study is based on the responsibilities you have at work.
Level 2 is intended for individuals whose role involves a broad range of activities, requiring a limited amount of supervision and working with some autonomy.
Level 3 is intended for individuals whose role involves a considerable amount of responsibility and is aimed at those who work at supervisory level.
Level 4 is intended for individuals who are working at senior level with considerable responsibility for the management of systems and resources, working with an extensive degree of autonomy.
