Adult Education Courses at Penwith College

Courses for 14-16 Year Olds

The 14-16 Increased Flexibility programme is a joint partnership between Cornwall College and Penwith College in West Cornwall.

The programme enables young people between the ages of 14 and 16 to undertake vocational programmes at college as well as undertaking their normal GCSEs at school.

Penwith College currently has 207 young people undertaking public services, leisure and tourism, beauty therapy, business studies and motor vehicle maintenance.

Since the programme began some 483 young people have undertaken courses at College which has enabled increased collaboration between schools and the College. Importantly there is an increase in young Penwith people undertaking vocational programmes.

For some young people the College has become less of a mystery and teachers believe that for some young people there has been a marked increase in maturity and self-esteem far above what was expected.

The young people come from Mounts Bay School, Humphry Davy School, Hayle Community School, St Ives School and Cape Cornwall School. Since the introduction of the programme the schools have begun to also develop vocational courses on their premises further expanding vocational opportunities for Penwith teenagers.

Further collaboration is now taking place with Penwith College developing vocational diplomas in ICT, health and social care, and media studies. This is part of a national initiative encouraging both schools and colleges to offer more vocational programmes for the 14-16 age group between now and 2013.
