About Penwith College - Sport and Leisure Facilities

Sports Academies

Many gifted and enthusiastic students aspire for a future in sport, whether that is playing in a semi or pro environment, or looking for a profession within the sport they love. This is why Penwith College offers four sports academies for hockey, canoeing, cricket and swimming.

What is the Sports Academy?

The Sports Academy gives the opportunity to achieve excellent academic and vocational qualifications in a friendly environment and delivers a dedicated and comprehensive training and playing regime (with close links to our partnership organisations). This means that the training will be worked into the timetable and will allow students extra time to concentrate on their sporting achievements as well as working on their further education qualifications.

What are the benefits of the Sports Academy?

The Academy will improve a students’ performance, provide a professional approach to their chosen sport and help to achieve their full sports potential through specialised and personalised training programmes with input from both teaching staff and club trainers. Academy students will enter regular local and national competitions and will have the opportunity to gain additional coaching qualifications.

Who can be part of the Sports Academy?

Any student between the ages of 16-19 can apply to be part of a Sports Academy. Students do not need to be studying sport but do need to be following a programme of study through Penwith College.

Which clubs support the Sports Academies?

Penzance Swimming Association and Water Polo Club, Penzance Hockey Club, Penzance Cricket Club and Penzance Canoe Club.

How do students apply?

Students will have to work for their place on the Academy as selection will be based on ability, commitment and dedication. Penwith College invites applications from committed sports enthusiasts for our canoe, hockey and swimming academies to start in September 2008.
