Business Students Success at Charity Dinner
A group of highly capable second year students studying a BTEC National Diploma in Business at Penwith College have been working closely with Charlotte Chadwick, Employment and Enterprise Officer of Penwith District Council to arrange a Charity Dinner in aid of disadvantaged youngsters in the area who are involved with Young Enterprise. The business students undertook a project management assignment that enabled them to be involved in client needs and critical path analysis, operational planning, networking and much more. The students were also tasked to liaise with a number of intermediaries and local business in order to obtain support for the event and all donations were auctioned on the night to raise funds.
The students were certainly professionally turned out on the night, dressed in their best and with the expertise of the Hair and Beauty department at the college they all enjoyed hair cuts and styles, manicures, and the ladies enjoyed a makeover too. The project culminated in the students and their dedicated lecturer, Jeannette Moyle helping set up the event, meeting and greeting the 200 guests and catering to their needs at the prestigious host venue, Tregenna Castle Hotel, St Ives on 24th Jan 2008. This project was an invaluable lesson to all involved. It should also be noted that as a result of the event two students are now entering into discussions with regards to an offer of employment based purely upon their performance on the project. This is especially welcome as this group of students complete their course in June 2008 after which some are progressing to University and the remainder are seeking employment locally. Paul Stretton-Stephens the Business Coordinator said, ”This project has been a fantastic opportunity for the students. To be involved with such a prestigious event, in a hands on role, has given them a great insight into project management. The students have really worked hard to make this event a success and along the way learned skills that cannot be taught in a classroom and have to be gained through experience. I am delighted that the students impressed local employers so much that two of them are in talks with a view to employment. My thanks also go to Charlotte Chadwick for supporting the students with her knowledge and expertise.”
